Dictionary Lab is designed to work primarily on your device. We do not require an account, we do not operate our own servers, and we never collect or sell your personal information or the content you create. The app does collect anonymous crash reports and usage statistics, described in section 6.
Everything you create in the app — dictionaries, words, definitions, tags, images, voice recordings and settings — is stored locally on your device only. It is never uploaded by us anywhere. Deleting the app (or clearing its storage) permanently removes this data.
The app asks for permissions only when a feature needs them, and every permission is optional:
When you use the auto-fill (cloud) feature while adding a word, the word you typed is sent to a third-party dictionary service to fetch its definition: dictionaryapi.dev for English words and the Wikimedia (Wiktionary) API for other languages. Only the word itself is sent — no personal information or device identifiers. These requests are subject to the privacy policies of those services. If you never use auto-fill, the only network traffic the app produces is the anonymous diagnostics described in section 6.
Pronunciation audio is generated by your device's built-in text-to-speech engine. Depending on your device and its settings, the engine (for example Google Text-to-Speech) may process the word to synthesize audio.
To fix bugs and understand which features matter, the app uses two Google Firebase services:
This data is aggregated, is not used to identify you, and is processed by Google under its own privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy). The app contains no advertising and does not share data with advertisers.
The app does not collect personal information from anyone, including children, and is suitable for general audiences. The diagnostics described in section 6 are anonymous and apply equally to all users.
If we change this policy, the updated version will be posted on this page and included in an app update, together with a new “last updated” date above.
